The FIFA World Cup is an international association football competition established in 1930. It is contested by the men's national teams of the members of FIFA, the sport's global governing body. The tournament is held every four years, and 2026 will be the next edition.
The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men's football championship contested by the national teams of the member associations of FIFA. It is scheduled to take place in Qatar in 2022. This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim-majority country. The 2022 World Cup will be the last to involve 32 national teams, with an expansion to 48 teams scheduled for the 2026 tournament.
The tournament will be held in November and December 2022, which is unusual for a World Cup, due to the climate in Qatar.
The host country was chosen by the FIFA Executive Committee on 2 December 2010 in Zurich, Switzerland. This was the first time that the World Cup was awarded to a country in the Arab world.
Qatar, which has a population of 2.7 million people, will be the smallest country ever to host a World Cup. It will also be the first World Cup to be held entirely in one country; all previous tournaments have been held across multiple countries.
The Qatar bid was widely criticized for a number of reasons, including the country's alleged support for terrorism, human rights abuses, and the fact that Qatar has never before qualified for the World Cup. However, FIFA's evaluation report found that the bid had "low operational risk", and that Qatar could host the tournament even if some of the proposed stadiums were not built.
The costs of hosting the World Cup have been estimated at $4 billion. Qatar has said that it will spend $200 billion on infrastructure projects in preparation for the tournament.
The format of the 2022 World Cup has not yet been announced, but it is expected that there will be 64 matches played across 32 days.
The 2022 World Cup will be the first to use the video assistant referee (VAR) system.
The winner of the 2022 World Cup will qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
